Why Books For Readers

A simpler way to donate books in Fresno and Clovis

Books For Readers is a Fresno and Clovis book donation pickup service built on one idea: a good book should find its next reader. We are an independent, locally owned community service, which is what lets us collect for free without relying on grants or volunteer schedules. If you want the backstory, you can meet the people behind Books For Readers.

You gather the books; we come to your door. New to donating this way? You can see how doorstep donation works in three steps, or find out which items qualify before you start. When you are ready, book your free collection and pick a day that suits you. Questions first? Call (559) 424-3383 or reach us with a question.

How it works

Three steps, no heavy lifting

  • Gather. Box or bag the books you are ready to part with. Mixed genres and sizes are fine.
  • Schedule. Tell us your address and choose a collection day that works for you.
  • Set out. Leave the books by your door, curb, or lobby and our driver handles the rest.

Coverage spans the central valley — check if we cover your neighborhood and we will confirm when you book.

Reuse first, always

After pickup, every donation is sorted with care. The first question for each book is simple: who can still read this? Readable titles are passed forward into the community — to readers, classrooms, little free libraries, and literacy partners across greater Fresno and Clovis. Choosing reuse over the landfill is exactly the priority the EPA describes in its guide to reducing and reusing everyday items.

Resellable books are sold to sustain the service, which is exactly what keeps pickups free for everyone. Only the small share that is genuinely unusable, like moldy or water-damaged copies, is set aside as a last resort.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is book donation pickup really free in Fresno and Clovis?

Yes. Pickup is free for every donor across the Fresno and Clovis area. Reselling a portion of the books funds the service, so you are never charged.

How many books do I need to donate?

There is no minimum for most neighborhoods, so a single box is welcome. For very large donations, mention the volume when you schedule so the right vehicle is sent.

What kinds of books do you take?

Almost any book in readable condition: fiction, nonfiction, textbooks, children's books, and cookbooks. We also take DVDs, CDs, audiobooks, games, and puzzles. Only moldy or badly damaged copies reach the end of the road.

Do I need to be home for the pickup?

No. Leave your boxes somewhere protected by your door, curb, or lobby on your scheduled day and the driver collects them.

What happens to the books after pickup?

Readable books are passed forward to local readers, classrooms, and little free libraries. Resellable titles fund the free service, and only genuinely unusable copies are set aside as a last resort.
