What Happens to Donated Books?

After pickup, donations are sorted with care. The first question for every book is simple: who can still read this? Most books answer that question easily, because readable is a low bar and a high share of donations clear it.

Resellable titles are sold to sustain the service, which is what keeps pickups free for everyone. The rest is passed forward into the community: to readers, classrooms, little free libraries, and literacy partners across the region.

Step one: careful hand sorting

Each book is sorted by hand and grouped by who is most likely to want it: children's books toward classrooms and family programs, textbooks toward students and tutoring programs, and general fiction and nonfiction toward community shelves and resale. Hand sorting also means unusual, collectible, or fragile items are noticed rather than lost in a bin.

Where readable books go

The readable majority is passed forward into the Fresno and Clovis community — to individual readers, classrooms, little free libraries, and literacy programs. The aim is to put each book where someone will actually want it.

Because the network is local, a box collected in one neighborhood often reappears on a school shelf or in a little free library a few miles away, and the turnaround from doorstep to new reader is usually short.

How resale keeps pickups free

A portion of donations carries genuine resale value, and selling those titles is what funds the free collection service. Without it, free doorstep pickups would not be possible.

That resale is not a hidden catch — the majority of donations are still given away, and much of the resold share reaches new readers through community book sale events, whose proceeds pay for the next round of free pickups.

What happens to books that cannot be reused

Only a small fraction of any donation is truly beyond reading — moldy, water-damaged, or falling apart. Those are handled responsibly as a genuine last resort; everything readable avoids that fate. Media and games follow the same rule: working items are passed forward, and only what no longer plays is set aside.

Box books so they survive the trip, keep media in its cases, and leave out anything moldy or water-damaged. Mention a large or unusual collection when you book so we route it well, and ask for written confirmation if you would like a record of what you gave.
